  • The following extract is from the Diary of Samuel Sewall, vol.1, page 501, in Massachusetts Historical Collections, Vol. 5, of the 5th series: "1699, Sept. 15, Friday, Mr. Newton and I rode to Newport; see aged Joan Savage (now Earl) by the way. Her husband, Ralph Earl, was born 1606, and his wife was ten or eleven years older than he; so she is esteemed to be one hundred and five years old." However, other sources list Joan's death as 1680.
