2nd Earl Cornwallis and 1st Marquess Cornwallis
Lord Cornwallis is probably best remembered for his surrender of British forces to American and French forces at Yorktown, Virginia during the American Revolution. Although it is often cited that Lord Cornwallis surrendered directly to General George Washington, Lord Cornwallis actually refused to attend the surrender ceremony. Instead, Brig-Gen Charles O'Hara led the British troops at the surrender. When O'Hara tried to surrender to the French Lt-Gen Comte de Rochambeau, he shook his head no and pointed to Washington. Washington in-turn refused and motioned to his second in command, Maj-Gen Benjamin Lincoln who finally accepted the surrender.
