  • In The American Genealogist (1981, Vol. 57, p. 88) it states that the claims of the parents of Abiel Marshall being Samuel Marshall and Rebecca Newberry are possible but unproven. It also claims that the first suggestion of this parentage was made by Douglas Merritt in Coxe and Connected Families (2nd ed. 1915), p. 20. However, John Lawrence also made this claim five years earlier in The Descendants of Moses and Sarah Kilham Porter (1910), p. 149. Evidence is needed to determine if there is any truth to this claim.
