The marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon to Isabella of Castile united the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile. The subsequent conquering of Navarre brought together the territories that would become Spain. He was in essence the first king of a united Spain.
King Ferdinand and his wife Queen Isabella sponsored the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492.
