- Notes:
It is possible that Sarah Smith was the second wife of William Copeland, his first being named Mary Smith. Pomfret vital records give William's first wife's name as Mary Smith, and William's first three children as "of William and Mary." However, Brooklyn vital records also records the marriage but gives William's wife as Sarah. William's fourth through thirteenth children are all recorded as "of William and Sarah." Although it is possible that there were two marriages and the Brooklyn marriage record is in error, it is also possible that there was only one wife named Sarah and the Pomfret records were in error. The latter seems most likely as William's first child was named Phineas, the same name as the father of Sarah Smith.
