    • Notes:
    • Donald Lines Jacobus in his Families of Ancient New Haven (Vol. 8, p. 1883) and Families of Old Fairfield (Vol. 1, p. 517) claimed that Elizabeth Sanford, wife of Joseph Tuttle, was the daughter of Andrew Sanford and baptized in Milford in 1671. Patricia S. Hemingway repeated Jacobus in her book The Hemingways: Past and Present and Allied Lines (pp. 662-663, 750).

Most other sources claim Elizabeth Sanford, wife of Joseph Tuttle, was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Paine) Sanford and born in New Haven in 1671.

A baptism record for Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew, has not been found, but the birth record for Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas, has been found. The will of Andrew Sanford mentions his daughters Mary and Hannah but does not mention daughter Elizabeth. Therefore we agree with the majority of sources and place Elizabeth Sanford as the daughter of Thomas Sanford, but clearly more research is needed.
