Hiram Bingham is said to have the distinction of serving the shortest term as a U. S. state governor. In 1924, he was elected as both the Governor of Connecticut and a U. S. Senator. He served as governor for one day after which he resigned to take his Senate seat.
Hiram Bingham is also associated with city of Machu Picchu. Although not the first explorer to visit the site, Bingham is recognized by some as the first explorer to make public the existence of the Inca citadel.
