21st White House Chief of Staff

      11th U.S. Secretary of Transportation

Andrew Hill Card Jr. is an American political figure known for his influential roles in both the public and private sectors. Born on May 10, 1947, in Brockton, Massachusetts, Card embarked on a career in politics that spanned several decades and numerous high-profile positions.

Card's political journey began in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served from 1975 to 1983. His early political success led him to national prominence when he was appointed as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1992 to 1993. In this role, Card managed significant transportation policies and initiatives, including efforts to enhance the nation's infrastructure.

Arguably, Card's most notable role was serving as the White House Chief of Staff under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2006. It was during this tenure that Card was involved in one of the most memorable moments of modern American history. On September 11, 2001, as President Bush was visiting an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida, Card approached the President and whispered the words, "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack." This moment, captured on live television, became a defining image of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Card's calm and composed demeanor during the crisis highlighted his steady leadership under pressure, as he played a crucial role in coordinating the immediate response to the attacks.

After leaving the White House, Card continued to influence public service and education. In 2014, he was appointed as the President of Franklin Pierce University, a position he held until 2016. During his tenure, Card focused on enhancing the university's academic programs and expanding its reach.
