    • 16th and 18th Governor of Massachusetts

Marcus Morton was an American lawyer and politician who served as the Governor of Massachusetts for two non-consecutive terms in the mid-19th century. He was born on April 19, 1784, in East Freetown, Massachusetts, and was the son of a prominent local judge.

Morton studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1810. He quickly established a successful legal practice and became involved in state politics, serving as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives and as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. He briefly became the acting Governor after the death of Governor William Eustis in 1825. Morton followed that by serving 15 years as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

In the 1840s, Morton would be elected to two non-consecutive terms as Governor of Massachusetts. During his second term, he advocated for education reform and supported the construction of new railroads throughout the state. After leaving office, Morton remained involved in politics and continued to practice law until his death on February 6, 1864.
