    • Online claims that Agnes's maiden name was either Speed or Clarke are almost certainly false.

      Mention of Agnes has only been found in two records, the will of her husband "Symond Ston of Moch Bromeley" dated 28 JUL 1557, and the will of "John Leper of Moche Bromeley" a year later. Neither give any indication of Agnes's parentage. If anything, Agnes may have been related to John Leper in some way.

      Simon's brother Thomas was married to an unknown daughter of John Speed, perhaps this is the source of the confusion. The will of John Speed of Great Bromley, dated 10 SEP 1554, gives bequests to his daughters which he names (Agnes is not one of them), and to Thomasyn and John Stone, "children of Thomas Stone that he had by my daughter, his first wife."

      Without further evidence, Agnes's parentage remains unknown.
