      Charles Henry Sawyer, born on March 30, 1840, in Watertown, New York, was a prominent American businessman and politician. He is best known for his tenure as the 41st Governor of New Hampshire from 1887 to 1889.

      Sawyer moved to Dover, New Hampshire, in his youth, where he later entered the family business, Sawyer Woolen Mills, which became one of the largest and most successful woolen manufacturing companies in the state. His business acumen not only brought him success in industry but also established him as a respected figure in the community.

      Politically, Sawyer was a staunch Republican, a party affiliation that aligned with his pro-business stance. Before becoming governor, he served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1869 to 1870. He also held the position of mayor of Dover from 1866 to 1867, and from 1876 to 1878, showcasing his commitment to public service at the local level.

      As governor, Sawyer focused on economic development, infrastructure improvements, and education reform. His administration is noted for advocating the advancement of public schools and supporting the state's growing industries, particularly in manufacturing.
