    • It has been suggested that Valentine Whitman (or Wightman) of Rhode Island was probably the brother of George Wightman who also settled in Rhode Island. Circumstantial evidence does seem to point to them being at least related as cousins if not brothers. They are also said by family tradition to be descendants of Edward Wightman of Burton-upon-Trent. Edward had the distinction of being the last person to be burned at the stake on English soil for heresy. He was executed at Litchfield on 11 APR 1612. However there is no evidence that has been found to confirm this relationship.
