    • In 1945, G. Andrews Moriarty wrote with regards to Thomas Hale's ancestry, "In view of the fact that the true parentage of Thomas Hale of Newbury was printed in the Register some sixty-four years ago, there would seem to be no excuse for the affiliation given him in the American Supplement of The Landed Gentry, and some descendant, more anxious for 'a gentle descent' than for his own highly respectable one from a substantial yeoman."

      Moriarty also wrote "The name of Hale is very ancient and widely spread in Hertfordshire, where it occurs as early as the first half of the 13th century, but there is no evidence that any of the name had risen from the ranks of the yeomanry before 1560.

      In 1947, Walter Goodwin Davis wrote of Thomas Hale, "No indication of the origin or ancestry of Thomas Hale has yet been found."
