    • Notes:
    • The name of John Stone's wife is unknown.  She apparently predeceased him as she is not mentioned in his will.

There is a false claim that John died without a will by 03 DEC 1592 when his alleged wife Mary married Edward Briggs at Great Bromley.  This claim appears to have originated in the Simon Stone genealogy published by J. Gardner Bartlett in 1926 (p. 36). Although Bartlett did extensive research in Great Bromeley and both his Simon Stone (pub. 1926) and Gregory Stone (pub. 1918) genealogies are great resources, they do contain some errors.

No evidence has been found that John Stone had a wife named Mary and John Stone was obviously still living on 16 JUN 1600 well after his alleged wife's marriage to Edward Briggs as that is the date of John Stone's will.

Bartlett is said to have eventually found John Stone's will, but unfortunately it was not until after he had published his Simon Stone genealogy that had the incorrect information.

A good resource for information on John Stone, with the errors corrected, is in Dean Crawford Smith's The Ancestry of Eva Bella Kempton 1878-1908, Part I, pp. 444-450.
