    • Notes:
    • There is a family tradition that John Lewis's father was a General Robert Lewis from Brecon, Wales and together with his wife Elizabeth, sailed from England to Virginia aboard the Blessing in 1635, and that Robert was the son of Sir Edward Lewis of the Van and Lady Ann Sackville, his wife.

First, there can be no doubt that the Robert and Elizabeth Lewis aboard the Blessing were not the parents of John Lewis. The Blessing never sailed to Virginia in 1635, it sailed to New England. Robert Lewis, aged 28 in 1635 (b.c. 1607), and his wife Elizabeth, aged 22 in 1635 (b.c. 1613) lived in Salem, Massachusetts. He died in New England by 6 July 1644 (date of inventory). (see Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635 [Boston, 2005], vol. 4, pp. 292-293, and Merrow Egerton Sorley, Lewis of Warner Hall: The History of a Family [Baltimore, 1979], pp. 18-19)

However, if you assume that the father of John Lewis was Robert Lewis (which is not proven), there were two men named Robert Lewis in Virginia at that time. One came aboard the Plaine Joan in 1635, aged 23 (b.c. 1612). The other came to Virginia aboard the Transport in 1635, aged 38 (b.c. 1597). Even if one of them was the son of Sir Edward Lewis (of which there is no evidence to confirm this), you still wouldn't know which of the two men was that son. Plus, since Virginia records for Robert Lewis do not contain his age, you cannot know which of the two men of that name they belong to.
