- Notes:
James E. Woodruff was a passenger aboard the steamer SS Arctic traveling from Liverpool to New York when it collided with the smaller SS Vesta on September 27, 1854. He was among the passengers that perished on that day and the following day. The captain of the SS Arctic survived the disaster and later wrote a letter describing his experience. He mentioned that he and several people managed to climb aboard a part of the paddle box. He states that about noon the next day a “Mr. S. M. Woodruff of New York was relieved by death.” He was probably referring to James Woodruff as he was the only Mr. Woodruff listed on the passenger list and he was a citizen of New York although he was a member of the firm Herring & Woodruff, of St. Louis.
