- Notes:
There are two opposing theories to the parentage of Lucy Hanks. One theory says that she is the daughter of Joseph and Nanny (Lee) Hanks and had Nancy Hanks, President Abraham Lincoln's mother, out of wedlock. The other theory says Lucy was a widow to an unidentified son of Joseph Hanks and Nancy Hanks was his daughter. On 21 OCT 2015, the results of a mtDNA study on the matrilineal kin of Lucy Hanks appears to have finally put this issue to rest. Lucy is a Hanks and not a Shipley. To learn more about this controversy, read The Lincoln-Hanks Debate.
