    • Notes:
    • Jan Fransse Van Husum's surname is also seen as Van Hoesen, Van Huysen, Van Huisen, Van Husem, and Van Hoese.

According to Joyce Lindstrom in her book The Van Hoose, Van Hooser, Van Huss family in the United States (1993), his original name was simply Jan Fransse, a patronymic name meaning “John, son of Francis” He was from the Schleswig city of Husum (now in Germany) and when he eventually left there he added Van Husum to his name. As he moved from place to place, his name reflected these changes. At one point it became Jan Frantz Van Husum (a Dutch variation), Johannes Van Hoesen (a German variation) and John Vanhosen (an American variation). Early court records reflect many other variations of his surname as well.
