  • There has been some debate as to whether this Daniel Stewart, father of John and grandfather of General Daniel Stewart, was actually a brother named John. However an 1768 deed seems to clear this up by stating "Hannah Stewart, wife of Daniel Stewart, Senior, dec'd." The confusion appears to have been caused by the son John Stewart reportedly being referred to as "Jr" to distinguish him from an uncle. There is also speculation as to Daniel's parentage with multiple possibilities possible. There is some speculation that this Stewart line can be traced directly back to Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany and son of Robert II, King of Scotland.
