Bertha Bergman is not the daughter of German immigrants Henry and Theresa (Loewe) Bergman as is claimed by some genealogy websites. The latter Bertha was still single and living with her parents in 1930, and later married Elmer Turry. She and Elmer are living with her parents in 1940.
A clue to the identity of this Bertha Bergman is that she is found living with Stephen Douglas and Leota (Shires) Price in Pitman, Montgomery County, Ilinois in 1920. Although most likely Bertha was a servant, the census lists her simply as a boarder with an occupation of "none." While Bertha was apparently born in Illinois, federal census records indicate her father was born in New York.
