  • Thomas Barnum should not be confused with the Thomas Barnum who married Mary Feakes. That Thomas Barnum's father-in-law, William Feakes, mentions Thomas in his will dated 07 MAY 1595 some thirty years before this Thomas Barnum was born. (see NEHGR 47:516)

    There are claims that Thomas Barnum is the son of Sir Francis Barnham and Elizabeth Lennard, or the son of Sir Martin Barnham, father of Sir Francis Barnham, and Judith Calthorpe. Evidence has not been found to support either claim. However, since Sir Martin Barnham died in 1610, he can be ruled out as the father. Also, the will of Sir Francis Barnham, dated 04 APR 1642, mentions five sons, but does not mention Thomas. Since Thomas Barnum was about 17 years of age and living at the time Sir Francis Barnham wrote his will, it seems unlikely that he was a son of Sir Francis Barnham. Pending new evidence, Thomas Barnum's parents should still be considered unknown.
