Who was Hiram Bingham?
Hiram Bingham III was an American explorer, politician, and academic who is best known for his role in the rediscovery of the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru. Born on November 19, 1875, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Bingham attended Yale University, where he studied history and geography, and later earned a PhD in Latin American history.
Bingham became interested in South American archaeology and made several expeditions to Peru in the early 1900s. During his expeditions, he discovered the lost city of Machu Picchu, which had been hidden in the Andes for centuries. The discovery was a major event in the field of archaeology and helped to bring attention to the rich cultural heritage of the Andes.
Bingham also served as a governor of the state of Connecticut from 1925 to 1931 and was a member of the U.S. Senate from 1933 to 1940. He died on June 6, 1956, at the age of 80.
