Who was Myron H. Avery?

Myron H. Avery, born on November 2, 1899, in Lubec, Maine, was a pivotal figure in the creation and development of the Appalachian Trail, one of the world's longest continuous footpaths. A Harvard Law School graduate, Avery's passion for hiking and the outdoors defined his true legacy.

Inspired by Benton MacKaye's 1921 vision of a trail spanning the Appalachian Mountains, Avery joined the Appalachian Trail Conference (now the Appalachian Trail Conservancy) and became its chairman from 1931 to 1952. His legal expertise and meticulous approach were instrumental in organizing, mapping, and marking the trail. Avery's leadership ensured the trail's completion, involving extensive fieldwork and negotiations with landowners.

Among his achievements, Avery published the first comprehensive Appalachian Trail guidebook in 1934, providing vital maps and information for hikers. He also played a crucial role in securing the trail's passage through key national parks, including the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah. In 1936, he became the first recognized "2000 miler" to complete the trail through section hikes.

Myron H. Avery passed away on July 26, 1952, leaving a lasting impact on American outdoor recreation and inspiring generations of hikers to explore the Appalachian Trail.
