Who is Tim Walz?

Tim Walz, born on April 6, 1964, in West Point, Nebraska, is an American politician and educator who has served as the 41st Governor of Minnesota since January 7, 2019. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), Walz has had a distinguished career in public service, marked by his commitment to education, military service, and leadership in government.

Before entering politics, Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, retiring as a command sergeant major, making him the highest-ranking enlisted soldier ever to serve in Congress. Walz's professional background is in education. He was a high school teacher and football coach in Mankato, Minnesota, where he earned a reputation for his dedication to his students and community. As governor, Walz has navigated significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, where he emphasized science-based approaches and public health measures. His leadership during the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis highlighted his commitment to addressing systemic racism and promoting justice and equality. On July 23, 2020, he signed into law a police accountability law that included a limited ban on officers using chokeholds as long as the officers are not at greater risk.

Walz’s tenure as governor has been marked by efforts to improve education, expand healthcare access, and address climate change, all while maintaining a focus on equity and inclusion. In January 2023, he signed law which protects access to reproductive health care including abortion, contraception and fertility treatments in Minnesota. Also in 2023, Walz signed a law requiring Minnesota to obtain all of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2040.
