Who was Norman Rockwell?

Norman Rockwell was an American artist whose most memorable artwork graced the covers of iconic magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Look, and the Boy Scouts of America's Boys' Life. He was also commissioned to paint the portraits of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. A portrait of actress Judy Garland was one of his last works.

Famous Kin

Norman Rockwell is a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins. He is also a direct descendant of Henry Howland, brother of Mayflower passenger John Howland. As a renowned American artist, it seems only fitting that Norman Rockwell has a family connection to another famous American artist, John Trumbull. Other creative kin include poets Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, author Edgar Rice Burroughs, composer Cole Porter, and singer/actor Bing Crosby.

Richard Charlton of Apley, Shropshire, England, was the 11th great-grandfather of Norman Rockwell. One of the confusing facts regarding Richard Charlton is that he had two daughters named Anne. One was the wife of Randall Grosvenor and the 10th great-grandmother of Norman Rockwell. The other was the wife of Francis Yonge. While at first glance this may appear to be a mistake, Douglas Richardson in his Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families (2013), Vol. V, p. 480, gives the following source as the evidence for the two daughters named Anne: Currier-Briggs, English Wills of Col. Fams. (1972), pp. 3-8.

John Rockwell of Stamford, Connecticut

John Rockwell is the 6th great-grandfather of Norman Rockwell. Some sources claim that this John Rockwell is the same as the John Rockwell baptized on 22 July 1621 in Fitzhead, Somersetshire, England. Robert Charles Anderson, in his The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635, Vol. 6, R-S, page 71, states that this cannot be the case as the wills of both parents of the Fitzhead John Rockwell only named daughters Mary and Hannah and son Simon, and the will of Simon named only sisters Mary and Hannah. So John Rockwell of Fitzhead does not appear to be the same man as John Rockwell of Stamford.
