- Notes:
Gurdon R. Smith's name is given as G. Robert Smith in his daughter Winnie's marriage certificate for marriage to Harry Boyd Grim in 1936.
In 1901, Gurdon Robbins Smith was a photo engraver living in Hartford, Connecticut, and married at Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 1905, Gurdon Robbins Smith was a photographer at Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1912, Gurdon Robbins Smith is living in Detroit, Michigan, and in December of that year, he and Ada Watterson got a marriage license in Philadelphia where he would live until his death in 1932.
In 1918, Gurdon Robbins Smith was a photo engraver for Edward Stern and Company, 140 N. 6th, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gurdon Smith's daughter Winnie is undoubtedly an illegitimate child. She was born at Detroit, Michigan 08 FEB 1911 after having been assumedly conceived around MAY 1910. The 1910 federal census enumerated on the 26 and 27 APR 1910, lists Gurdon's wife Lottie, mother-in-law Sarah J, and daughter Bernice in Providence, Rhode Island, living without him. However, Lottie still lists her marital status as married. He moved to Detroit, Michigan and their marriage must have ended shortly after as The Phildelphia Inquirer on 25 DEC 1912 published a list of marriage licenses that included Gordon [sic] R. Smith, Detroit, Mich., and Ada J. Watterson, of Philadelphia. Gurdon's first wife Lottie remarried at North Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island 15 OCT 1913. His daughter Winnie is listed in the household of George Grant in the 1920 federal census as Winifred Grant and not Smith, although she is listed as George Grant's step-daughter. However, Winnie knew who her father was as she gave her name as Winnie Smith Duckworth on the marriage certificate of her second marriage and she listed her father as G. Roberts [sic] Smith. Also, when Winnie's husband Joseph Duckworth died in a motorcycle accident in 1929, a newspaper article about the crash identified Winnie as the "daughter of Mrs. George Grant." Winnie must not have talked to her second husband about her father as he listed the name of Winnie's mother on Winnie's death certificate, but listed Winnie's father as unknown. He was probably only aware of the name of Winnie's step-father.
