The 1910 federal census states that John Cushman is a widower. It also states that he was married for 13 years and had 4 children of which 3 are still living. All of his children can be found living in the 1870 federal census although his youngest is living in his brother David Crocket Cushman's household. His wife must have died sometime between 1864 and 1870.
An 1863 U. S. Civil War draft registration list both John Cushman and his brother Crockett Cushman as unmarried. This appears to be a mistake as his oldest child was already 8 or 9 years old at the time, and his youngest would be born the following year. The unmarried status should have been placed on his brother and not him.
