      Who was Norman S. Case?

      Norman S. Case was the 55th Governor of Rhode Island and a dedicated public servant whose career spanned law, military service, state politics, and federal regulatory leadership. Born in Providence, Case graduated from Brown University in 1908 and earned his law degree from Boston University in 1912.

      During World War I, Case served as a captain in the Rhode Island National Guard. His unit, Troop A of the 1st Cavalry Squadron, was federalized and reorganized as Company A of the 103rd Machine Gun Battalion, part of the famed 26th “Yankee” Division. He saw active duty in France and later held administrative roles, including Assistant Provost Marshal with the Services of Supply. For his service, Case was awarded the Order of the Black Star of Benin by the French government—an honor typically bestowed on individuals, including foreigners, who rendered distinguished military or civil service benefiting France or its colonial territories.

      Following the war, Case was appointed U.S. District Attorney for Rhode Island (1921–1926) and then elected Lieutenant Governor. He became governor in 1928 after the death of Aram J. Pothier and won election in his own right in 1930. His administration emphasized infrastructure development and government modernization during the onset of the Great Depression.

      In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), where Case served until 1945. His tenure helped guide the regulation of radio and telecommunications during a period of rapid technological growth.

      Norman S. Case exemplified civic responsibility and service across multiple arenas. His military decoration from France and long public career mark him as one of Rhode Island’s most internationally recognized 20th-century leaders.
