    Who was George Albert Smith?

    George Albert Smith was the 8th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), serving from 1945 until his death in 1951. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, into a prominent Latter-day Saint family, he was the grandson and namesake of early church leader George A. Smith, a cousin to founder Joseph Smith.

    Ordained as an apostle in 1903, Smith was known for his gentle demeanor, spiritual devotion, and focus on welfare and humanitarian service. During his presidency, he oversaw significant post–World War II efforts to aid European Latter-day Saints, organizing relief shipments and advocating for global outreach. Under his leadership, the church also emphasized building local leadership abroad and expanding missionary efforts, particularly in Latin America and Europe.

    Smith suffered from chronic health issues for much of his life, which deepened his emphasis on compassion and mental well-being. He was a vocal advocate for religious tolerance and served on the board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
