John Hampden was an English parliamentary leader who stood trial for refusing to be taxed for ship money and whose attempted unconstitutional arrest by King Charles I led to the Civil War. A Parliamentarian victory led to the execution of King Charles I and the establishment of Oliver Cromwell as leader.
