The case for Lucas Tryon to be the son of John Tryon and Rhoda Lucas appears to be a circumstantial one. Unfortunately he is the one child out of twelve whose birth fails to appear in the Middletown VR or whose baptism is not in the Middletown Church records. Wesley Tryon in his book The Tryon Family in America claims that Lucas was born 25 FEB 1794 in Middletown, Connecticut, but does not indicate any source for the information.
Lucas is the youngest child and the only child to be born after 1790. By 1790 his parents had moved from Middletown to Southington (aka South Farmington) and by 1793 to Berlin, Connecticut. This helps explain the reason for the missing birth and baptismal records.
Not knowing Wesley Tryon's sources, there are still a number of pieces of circumstantial evidence to support the parentage of Lucas. In the 1800 census, there is one male child under 10 years old in the household. Lucas would have been about 4 years old at the time. All the children listed in the vital and church records were over 10 years of age. This supports the conclusion that John Tryon and Rhoda Lucas did have a young son that did not appear in the birth or baptism records at Middletown. Also the fact that Lucas's given name is the same his mother's maiden name further supports the theory. In addition, Canadian census records give his birthplace as the United States and his son George Noah gave Luca's birthplace as Connecticut. The fact that Lucas gave George a middle name of Noah, the same name as his brother, and that same brother also named a son Lucas, further supports the conclusion.
