In 1818, John Milton Hanson's father William legally changed the family name from Hoar to Hanson although his father had already been using it since before John was born.
“An ACT to change the Names of the several persons therein mentioned.
BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That from and after the passing of this Act, . . . that William Hoar, of Deerfield, shall be allowed to take the name of William Hanson, and that his several minor children shall be allowed to take the same name, viz.: Lucy Hanson, Ariel Hanson, Submit Hanson, Flavilla Hanson, John Milton Hanson, Caroline Hanson, Melinda Hanson, Persis Hanson, and Edwin Hanson. . . . [June 12, 1818]”
