Capt. John Barnard was in command of an American ship on 12 DEC 1778 when he was overtaken by a British man-of-war and shot dead by one of its officers on his own quarter deck after he had surrendered. The officer was subsequently tried at New Orleans and hung on the yard-arm of his own vessel.
