William Johnson's given name is also seen as Wingle. He is almost certainly of Dutch descent and not English.
William Johnson is often claimed to be the son of Thomas Johnson from Yorkshire, England, who drowned in New Haven harbor in 1640. There is no evidence to support the claim. Thomas Johnson had two known children: Thomas of Newark, New Jersey, and Jeremiah, of Derby, Connecticut.
