James Field "enlisted in Capt. Douglas's company in the Regiment under the command of Col. Sherman of the Connecticut line of Continental Troops" in the month of November or December 1780 at Derby, Connecticut. James Field left the service at the end of the war at West Point, New York about 1783 after which he continued to reside in New York and possibly Vermont.

It is possible that James Field was the son of his father's second wife Experience.
