- Notes:
Both NEHGS NEXUS (1999), vol. 16, p. 118 and The Lowther Family (1990) by Hugh Owen mistakenly identify Margaret Edgeworth as Margaret Lowther, sister of Sir Gerald Lowther, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, and daughter of Sir Gerard Lowther and Elizabeth Golling.
The misidentification of Margaret is a result of misinterpreting the will of her alleged brother Sir Gerald Lowther. In his will dated 14 NOV 1659, he refers to the wife of John Bysse as his “sister Bisse.” The above sources apparently interpreted “sister” in the strict sense of the word. However, Margaret was not the sister of Sir Gerald Lowther. In fact, Margaret was the sister-in-law of Sir Gerard Lowther's wife, Margaret King. Margaret King was the sister of John King who was Margaret Edgeworth's first husband, before she married John Bysse. So Sir Gerard Lowther referred to Margaret (Edgeworth) (King) Bysse as his “sister Bisse.”
