The history regarding the Rev. Samuel Whiting has been clouded by a hoax perpetrated by James Robinson Newhall in 1862 when he published a fabricated diary of a non-existent Obadiah Turner, an alleged parishioner of the Rev. Samuel Whiting. Unfortunately, subsequent histories of the Whiting family used extracts from this fake diary to describe the life of the Rev. Samuel Whiting.
