- Notes:
The 1908 bookHistory of Whiteside County, Illinois, Vol. 2 (p. 352) gives the mother of William H. Cushman's children as Betsy Barnett. The death certificate for son John, who was born about 1833 in Indiana, gives his mother's name as Rebecca Wallace. Betsy is William's wife in the 1850 federal census. No death record for Rebecca, or marriage record for either marriage, have been found.
It seems likely that William H. Cushan did have two wives. John, whose death certificate lists Rebecca Wallace as his mother, has some circumstantial evidence supporting it. He has an older brother named Wallace, and his older sister Polly Ann (Cushman) (Chaffee) Morehouse named a son Wallace. Since the Whiteside County history does not mention Rebecca, it would seem likely she died before the family arrived in Illinois. Therefore, John and his older siblings, all born in Ohio or Indiana, were likely children of Rebecca Wallace. All of John's younger siblings, born in Whiteside County, Illinois, were likely the children of Betsy Barnett. John's wife was Mary Ann Barnett, daughter of Anderson Barnett. It seems likely that his wife Mary Ann is in some way related to his step-mother Betsy.
