  • A note attached to the 1919 passport application of George W. McGuire Jr. reads partly as follows:

    George W. McGuire Jr. is clear. M.I.D. has a file on a F.W. Robinson of the firm of Hanovia Chemical and Manufacturing Co. of Newark N.J. He is one of their salesman (sic) and they handle measuring instruments. He is supposed to be a very clever man. He is suspected of having a German name and masquerading under the name Robinson. Now the Witness and this Man probably are not the same but Capt Wilson gave this information for our benefit.

    The reason for the note being attached to George McGuire's application is that Frank W. Robinson was the witness who supplied the affidavit identifying George. In the affidavit Frank Robinson says that he has known George personally for 5 years. Since World War I had just ended, it appears that Frank Robinson had a file on him for possibly being a German spy.
