Samuel Reed was among those who marched on 20 April 1775 from Abington and Bridgewater to Marshfield in response to the Battles of Lexington and Concord the day before, engagements that sparked the start of the Revolutionary War. Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "Concord Hymn" referred to this as "the shot heard round the world."
Copies of some records left by Samuel's son Daniel Reed to his daughter Ellen included a story about Samuel that while being "out on scout with twelve others they suddenly came upon a company of Red Coats who fired upon them. Some threw down their arms and fled. Grandfather ran but the strap of his knapsack caught in a bush. While trying to disentangle himself the bullets flew thick around him. He thus became separated from his comrades and it was several weeks before he could find his command, as they had moved and he could get no trace of them in that sparsely settled country."
