  • Although Philip Grinstead owned a small number of slaves, he is said to have been a believer in the policies of Abraham Lincoln. He was loyal to the Union during the Civil War and formed a company of Home Guards. In 1862, he was shot in his home by a Confederate soldier. As he lay dying of his wounds, his home continued to be harrassed by Confederate soldiers encamped nearby.

    Daughters of the American Revolution records give Philip Wade Grinstead's parents as William Grinstead and Lucy Hooker. This is incorrect as William was Philip's step-father. Lucy did not marry William in Barren County, Kentucky, until two years after Philip's birth. She first married Philip Grinstead in Virginia. Philip was the father of Philip Wade Grinstead.
