  • According to an article in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (1919, v. 50, pp. 46-47), Mary, wife of John Sinclair, is the illegitimate daughter of Sir Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. However, Douglas Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry, 2nd edition (2011, Vol. 3, pp. 178-179), gives Mary Stewart, wife of John Sinclair, as the daughter of Adam Stewart and Janet Ruthven, and Mary Stewart, wife of Lawrence Sinclair of Goat in Shetland, as the daughter of Sir Robert Stewart.
