  • Rhoda's maiden name may have been Knapp. She may have been the daughter of Eunice Knapp and a sister of Noel Knapp. Both are found living with Rhoda's family in the 1850 Federal Census. Eunice and Noel Knapp are also found living with Leander H. and Abigail (Sill) Knapp in the 1870 Federal Census. Perhaps Leander is another sibling of Rhoda. Both Rhoda's husband, Alpheus Whitaker, and Leander H. Knapp were harness makers.

    However, Leander Knapp is said to be the son of William and Abigail (Sill) Knapp according to the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy published in 1953 by Alfred Averill Knapp, M.D. Eunice and Noel Knapp are not found in the book, but clearly they are related to Leander H. Knapp. The circumstantial evidence mentioned above would seem to add doubt the book's identification of Leander Knapp's parents. More research is needed to identify Rhoda's parents.
