Stephen McCaskill is said to be the illegitimate son of John Jett McCaskill (who was white) and Annie Hogan (who was black). Although Federal Census records seem to support this claim, more evidence is needed to confirm it.
It appears that Stephen is the Stephen Hogan found in John Jett McCaskill's household in 1870. His mother Ann appears in the household of James Flournay next door. He again is found in John Jett McCaskill's household in 1880 where he is listed as a servant. However, his surname is listed this time as McCaskill.
