      Ben Ames Williams was an American novelist born on March 7, 1889, in Macon, Mississippi. He grew up in a small town in Iowa and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. After graduation, Williams worked as a newspaper reporter for several years before turning to writing fiction full-time.

      Williams's first novel, "The Great Accident," was published in 1929 and was a critical success. He went on to write more than 30 novels and numerous short stories throughout his career. Some of Ben Ames Williams's more notable work includes the followng novels that were turned into films: Leave Her to Heaven (1945), The Strange Woman (1946), and All the Brothers Were Valiant (1923 and 1953).

      In addition to his writing, Williams was also an avid historian and wrote several books on the history of New England. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received several literary awards during his lifetime.

      Williams passed away on February 4, 1953, in Brookline, Massachusetts, at the age of 63.
