  • The paternal ancestry of Jacob Johnson has always been a mystery with various theories being promoted by different historians. Multiple sources have Jacob as a direct descendant of Sylvanus Johnson (d. 1763) of Johnston and Amelia Counties in Virginia.

    The Wikipedia article on Jacob Johnson claims this has been proved false through DNA testing of a direct descendant of Sylvanus Johnson and then compared to the DNA results of a direct descendant of Andrew Johnson's brother William. The DNA shows the two are not related.

    However, the DNA also shows that Jacob was a close relative to Moses Johnson (ca.1788 - ca.1873) of Carter County, Tennessee. This suggests that Jacob is a direct descendant or close relative of William Johnson (d. 1710) of Surry County, Virginia.
