  • John Stites was alleged to have died at the extraordinary age of 122. As is often the case, his age was almost certainly exaggerated.

    The existence of John Stites as the father of Richard Stites is said to have come from a family bible in the possession of a descendant of John's grandson William Stites (1676-1727), son of Richard. In 1912, this descendant was said to be William Stites of Springfield, New Jersey, "great-grandson" of the elder William Stites.

    The lack of documentable evidence and alleged age of 122 has led some Stites descendants to doubt the bible entry and the existence of John Stites. More research and evidence would be welcome.
