      Jane Doty's tombstone gives her birth year as 1847, however, her death certificate gives it as 1845.

      There were two Jane Doty’s in Butler County, Ohio, both born about 1845. They were first cousins with one being the daughter of Samuel Doty and Sarah Morris, and the other the daughter of Samuel’s brother John Doty and his wife Eliza McBride. The two Jane Dotys married Harvey Kigel and Joseph Russell respectively at Butler County, Ohio in the 1860s. The question is, which daughter married which man?

      Most online genealogies, at the time of this writing, state that the Jane Doty who married Harvey Kigel was the daughter of Samuel Doty, and the Jane Doty who married Joseph Russell was the daughter of John Doty. It seems likely that the opposite is true for the following reasons.

      First, the death certificate for Jane (Doty) Kigel states that her father was John Doty born at Oxford, Ohio, although it also gives her mother’s name as Jane not Eliza. This may be explained by Jane's mother having died when Jane was very young. Her father also died a decade later while Jane was still a minor. Another piece of evidence, although very circumstantial, is that Harvey Kigel lived next door to Clarissa Sumpter at Union, Indiana in the 1860 federal census. Clarissa later married Aaron Doty, son of John and Eliza (McBride) Doty.

      Based on the father's name on the death certificate, and the two spouses for Aaron and Jane being next door neighbors, it seems likely that the Jane Doty who married Harvey Kigel was the sister of Aaron Doty. Therefore, this Jane Doty was likely the daughter of John Doty, and the other Jane Doty, wife of Joseph Russell, was the daughter of Samuel Doty.
