    • Although Barney Cushman is found listed among the children of David Crocket Cushman in the 1870 federal census, and is specifically listed as a son in the 1880 federal census, he is actually a nephew of David Crocket Cushman. His father is John Cushman, a brother of David Crocket Cushman. Evidence for this is found in the 1900 federal census and his obituaries in various papers. His older siblings are found living with their father and step-grandmother Betsey Barnett in the 1870 federal census. Barney Cushman's mother died before 1870 which would explain why the children were dispersed among relatives.
