United States Senator from Michigan
Kinsley Scott Bingham was born on December 16, 1808, in Camillus, New York. He graduated from Hamilton College and then studied law in Syracuse. He moved to Michigan and settled in Green Oak Township where he practiced law and became involved in politics.
Bingham served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1841 to 1842, and later as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1851. In 1854, he was elected as the 11th governor of Michigan, serving from 1855 to 1859. Bingham was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1858, where he served until his death on October 5, 1861. His legacy includes the Bingham Center, a research library at the University of Michigan that houses collections related to women's history and activism.
